Shopping around for the best baby video monitor on the block? This collection of cute, creepy and comedic stories will help you realize the gems that you can get out of one simple remote camera watching over your kid:

Ghosts in the Machine

The best baby video monitors are very sensitive – they can even pick up whispers and laughter from things that aren’t even there!

Users on Reddit have been sharing scary stories of voices and sounds coming from their monitors for years now. One user shared how she heard an Asian woman whispering in Japanese over the baby monitor. She immediatelyjumped up and rushed to her baby’s side.

Nothing. The baby was still sleeping

She went back to the living room, heard the voices again and rushed back to her baby – who was crying by this time. It took her five minutes (and a near panic attack) to realize that her monitor was picking up signals from someone else’s channel.

Lesson learned: the radio signal of even the best baby video monitors on the market need to be set up so they don’t pick up unwanted channels.

The Case of the Dying Baby Camera

Don’t always assume that a technical problem is the cause of a nanny camera frequently shutting down by itself.

Some parents over on Reddit wondered why their nanny cameras have a tendency to shut down. Everything on the technical side seems to be working out just fine, from the power supply to the wireless Internet access points that some IP cameras use.

Turns out that the big, shiny button with the glowing light is irresistible to toddlers.

Some of the best baby video monitors come with a feature that captures a screenshot the moment they are powered down. One parent’s adorable child still sucking on a pacifier was the last thing the monitor saw before being shut down.

Lesson learned: cover up those bright LED lights so the little tyke doesn’t fiddle around with your baby monitor – or any other appliance for that matter.

A Very Regretful Father

The great thing about the best baby video monitors is that they can be repurposed to handle a lot of things – something that one father realized oh so late.

The dad in question shared his soul-crushing regret that he ever gave a nanny camera to his two daughters. They were transformed into “26-year-old cat ladies” who just wouldn’t shut up about the cute things their cats do.

They would even call up a frustrated dad at random times of the day – even in a meeting – to gleefully inform him of the latest cutesy things their cat has done.

He predicts that the cameras will “malfunction” in the near future.

Lesson Learned: a nanny camera can be repurposed to do a lot of things when the kids are all grown up – like annoying the hell out of dad with cat stories.

A Possessive Possibility

This spooky story was captured by a parent creeping up to check up on the kids, but it could be one that was easily captured with the best baby video monitors out there.

A Redditor parent noticed the five-year old child go into her two-year old brother’s room. The parent wanted to quietly sneak up to the little girl – who had a foam sword tied to her back – and tell her not to bother her sleeping brother. Before the parent could get to her though, the girl leaned down and whispered to her brother “don’t worry pumpkin, I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

That doesn’t sound creepy – until the parent shared that nobody used the word “pumpkin” in the house, and that the child’s whisper was in a different voice and was much louder than her regular speaking voice.

Lesson Learned: a baby monitor can be a pretty useful tool for checking out if your child is being possessed by something supernatural.

Bleach Your Ears Out

That which has been heard cannot be unheard.

So one Redditor’s wife was out of town and had his in-laws help watch the baby. He set up his baby monitor as usual and went to sleep – only to be awoken at 1AM by what he thought was his baby acting up.

Except it was his in-law parents that were the ones acting up, with his mother-in-law shouting to his father-in-law to “give it to her hard.”

The flustered dad quickly turned off his monitor and bemoaned how he couldn’t get the sound out of his head. One Redditor even suggested how the poor guy would hear his mother-in-law’s voice the next time his wife tells him to “give it to her hard.”

Lesson Learned: the best baby video monitors out there have very sensitive microphones – ones that you may want to tone down when you have guests in the room next to your baby’s.
